Abelia prefers to keep her past under wraps, simply because it isn't the past you would expect from such an extravagant, lovely woman as her. Abelia's life began on a cold winter's night, born to a young woman struggling to get by as an artist. Isabel was full of talent, but just had no way to get her art out there. As a result, she was often barely able to scrape by, and when she ended up pregnant with a baby, she panicked. Leaving the tiny northern town of Snowpoint, she found that a much larger city would probably help her get more business. So, as a result, she first went to Hearthome, then to Jubilife, and, not finding anything decent for her there, found herself in Alamos Town, where, as it seemed, fate had brought her. Starting out drawing cityscape scenes from the small park near the center of town, Isabel soon gained the attention of a local businesswoman, who soon became the young artist's patron.
Shortly after Isabel moved in to her new apartment with a beautiful picturesque view of the city, her child, a girl, was born. Naming her Abelia, after her own grandmother, Isabel began to spend most of her time with her newborn daughter, not having much time to spend on her art. Her patron, an old childless widow, presented a proposition to Isabel--she would continue funding her if Isabel would give Abelia to her to raise as her own. Reluctantly, the young mother agreed, tearfully giving up her own flesh and blood to the woman she called her patron.
Abelia was raised to be a young lady, seeing Isabel as just a woman working under her "mother." She went through etiquette classes, went to socials with her adoptive mother, and lived what appeared to be a life of complete and total luxury.
Until she began to have the dreams.
She was underwater, though she could breathe just as easily as if she were standing on dry land. Around her, a myriad of water Pokemon drifted by her. Tentacool, Magikarp, Wailmer, all swam by her. However, they came and went, never looking at her twice. What did come and visit her more often, however, was a beautiful white Dewgong. The Pokemon would twist and twirl about her as she remained there, suspended in the water, as if hung from a cord. The white Pokemon would dance around her every night, and she, too, would dance, joining in on the silent waltz that the Dewgong offered to her. The pair soon were twirling and twisting beneath the waves together, all sorts of other Pokemon looking on or just swimming by without noticing.
However, after nearly three years of having these dreams, the Dewgong did something it had never done before. Instead of extending a fin and beginning the dance, it swam up toward the surface. Curious, Abelia followed, breaking the surface and taking in her first breath in the whole three years she had been dreaming. With that, the Dewgong then swung its powerful tail, catching the girl on the crown of the head and pushing her straight under. Unlike before, where she was able to breathe easily under the water, she realized she wasn't. She was drowning. Clawing at the Dewgong who was holding her under, she felt as if her lungs were ready to burst forth from her chest. She tried fighting it more and more, and, unlike most children, she did not wake in the middle of shifting. She finally awoke when she felt her body going limp and her mind going black. She opened her eyes to realize that the reason she was in such unbearable pain was that she had shifted. She was no longer a girl. She was a Dewgong.
The dry night air was bad for her, so she managed to drag herself out of bed and across her bedroom to the bathroom. After fumbling with the doorknob for nearly a half hour, she pushed herself into the bathroom and began running herself an icy cold bath, which she heaved herself into.
When her mother woke up the next morning, she was alerted by one of her servants that Abelia was not in her bed, and that a strange Pokemon was in the bathtub. Taking her Purugly, her mother walked into the room, seeing the Dewgong, and recognizing the bright red eyes that could only belong to Abelia. That morning, she requested that Isabel come see her.
"You! How dare you give me a cursed child!" the woman barked at Isabel, who stared in shock at her Dewgong daughter. She very unceremoniously threw the girl she had called her daughter for nearly twelve years back at the woman who had birthed her, while refusing to give her any more money for her artistic endeavors.
Isabel was at first overjoyed that she had her daughter back, but Abelia was confused. She did not know this woman as anything more than one of her mother's servants. She often refused to believe Isabel's fervent attempts to make her believe that she was, in fact, her daughter, until, one evening, Isabel took Abelia to the river. The water, clear and cold in the nippy autumn, was all too tempting to the girl. She dove in, shifting into her Dewgong form in midair, and began splashing and twisting around in the water. What she didn't realize was that she wasn't alone. A Vaporeon appeared out of nowhere and began swimming with her. Looking up to the platform where she had dove off, Abelia realized that Isabel was no longer there.
"I'm one, too," was all the woman said. "Is that not proof enough?"
Abelia was still skeptical. Until Isabel received a letter from the woman she had, for the past twelve years, called her mother.
It described how she regretted taking Abelia from her as a child, bemoaning the fact that now she was losing business because she had what was considered a demon child. Isabel allowed Abelia to read, reread, and re-reread the letter before the girl realized just what was going on. However, then she was hit with another revelation. In order to escape the woman's wrath, the two would have to move. So, as a result, they bounced around, traveling from town to town, until they finally settled in Sunyshore City. It was there that they first caught wind of Avalon Academy. Abelia was all too willing to go, just to escape the madness she was facing.
Needless to say, it was a paradise. Seeing all those children that were just like her, all shifters, almost all misunderstood, she was fascinated. She lost her skittish nature, becoming much more relaxed, much more befitting of her Dewgong shape. It was also there that, at fifteen, she met her first love, a sweet young Froslass shifter named Laura. The two were inseparable for the three years they were together at the academy. Both showed a great interest in the aesthetics of contests, though it was Laura that showed a greater interest in commanding and manipulating the contest, while Abelia seemed much more interested in performing and showing the crowd just what she was capable of. So, after their graduation, the two set out together, Abelia perfectly posed as a Dewgong, and began performing in contests in Sinnoh. They rose to fame rather quickly, as Abelia's performances always seemed to have just the right effect on the crowd. The next four years would be full of successful contests, prizes, traveling through both Sinnoh and Hoenn, and plenty of prize money to keep them going.
Until, one day, Laura disappeared. Abelia woke up one morning to see that Laura had vanished from the hotel room they had been staying in. Not a trace of her was left--no notes, none of her clothes, nothing. Abelia, however, still had her own suitcase, where she had kept the prize money from the past three weeks. It was more than enough to get her back to Sunyshore City, and back to Avalon Academy. When the administration asked her what drove her, a now-famous coordinating Pokemon, to return, she mentioned Laura's disappearance. Search parties went out, only to come up empty.
Abelia still wonders what happened of her beloved Laura, but now, she tries to drown out her sorrows with alcohol or immerses herself in water and swims to calm her frayed nerves. She has taught Advanced Coordinating at Avalon for nearly eight years now, and though she still misses Laura, she has begun to return to her calm, mellow self, and has even begun making playful passes at others in the school.
